RFC 1052's Recommendation for NM

SNMP history

In 1988, the IETF recommended SNMP [RFC1052] for short term use.

SNMP Development:[]

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is initially known as the Simple Gateway Monitoring Protocol (SGMP), used to manage the communication links. Later, the SGMP experienced lots of changes, especially SMI and MIB structure added in the protocol, and this improved protocol is the well-known SNMP. There are three versions of SNMP introduced so far.

SNMPv1:

SNMPv1 is the first edition of SNMP versions, publised in 1990. It specifies five core protocol data units (PDUs), which are get request, get-next request , set request, get responce and trap. SNMPv1 is easy to implement and widely used but with poor security. Also it is not simple for management applications to use. Managers must work around certain limitations.

SNMPv2:

SNMPv2 was introduced to address the limitation of SNMPv1 in 1995,described in RFC 2578. Another two PDUs, GetBulkRequest and InformRequest were added in SNMPv2 and also carried over to SNMPv3.

SNMPv3:

SNMPv3 is the latest version of SNMP, defined in RFC 3411-RFC 3418. It is SNMPv2 with security by allowing the encryption and authentication.
