Presenting results of performance monitoring[]
Several tools exist for visualising network performance, e.g. Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/
The Multi Router Traffic Grapher is the free software for monitoring and measuring the traffic load on network links, which allows the user to see traffic load on a network over time in graphical form.
Multi Router Traffic Grapher wasdeveloped by
Tobias Oetiker to monitor router traffic, but has developed into a tool that can create graphs and statistics for almost anything.
Loss of service:
Ifa loss of traffic for some reason occurs for a few hours, it may look like this:
This particular server experienced about a 20min loss of traffic around 10:30am.
Periodic spikes may indicate regular backups:
Spikes occur everyday, which indicates that spikes can be caused by daily backups.
Capped demand may indicate constraint on supply, e.g. throttling:
Throttling is a process to regulate the rate where application processing is conducted, either statically or dynamically. Here, Throttling is used to limit the maximum throughput of the network.
A flat top to the outgoing bandwidth like above shows the network site was slow and /or non responsive to users at that time. This situation suggests bandwidth capping or throttles.
