Cable Modem :

As per the definition of modem the functionality Cable modem is also designed to connect a internal network formed by a router to the internet. The internet service could be through a cable or a DSL.  Cable modem is designed to operate over radio frequency channels on a hybrid fibre - coaxial and RFoG infrastructure.

A Multimedia Terminal Adapter(MTA) also operates same as cable modem , but it also provides Home phone service apart from high speed internet.

MTA is a hardware that interfaces with an IP network. It uses internet connectivity that is deployed through DSL, Cable Modem and other Ethernet connections. TO simply state it replaces a Modem if you are using ISDN digital connection as modem uses analog signals. MTA is important for VOIP cap abilities. It can be implemented in two ways. First as an embedded MTA with in the DOCSIS Cable Modem or as a standalone MTA device that connects to a Cable Modem.

A modem with an MTA MAC is going to be a cable/VoIP modem. As it supports both internet and also home telephone, it has HFC which is main cable mac and then the MTA MAC which is the telephone portion.

MAC Address

The MAC address for a cable modem is provided by the manufacturer. It is usually labeled on the modem.Cable modems might have multiple MAC addresses, one for the HFC side (cable TV coax socket), and one for the CPE side (Customer Premises Equipment, the Ethernet socket)

MTA Status : This is used to identify the voice lines on the device. As stated above MTA’s have 2 different addresses, one for main cable and other for telephone portion.

The Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA) Status shows the status of the voice ports on the gateway.

MTA Provision Status - Displays all active voice lines.

MTA MAC Address - The MAC address of the MTA interface.

MTA IP Address. -The IP MTA address.

MTA Telephony Signaling - The type of telephony signaling the MTA currently uses.
